Overall, I feel that the media outlook on my major is pretty positive compared to other humanities degrees. Communications doesn’t really seem to be considered as much of an “arts” degree as other degrees in the school might be, and it is pretty widely accepted that you can do a lot with a communications degree. When looking online, everything I found seemed pretty positive, explaining that a communications degree is broad and allows you to go in many directions. As a writing minor, however, I found an article from Forbes titled “Why The Humanities Matter More Than Ever—Even When You Keep Hearing Otherwise”, by Marvin Krislov. This article discusses how humanities programs are being cut at an alarming rate from colleges, which is taking away key pieces of information for both STEM and humanities majors. The author explains how humanities encourage a type of thinking that no other field can. This type of thinking involves self-discovery, and a discovery of our own opinions. Without humanities courses, this kind of learning never happens.
