Before reading this article, I had no idea how to put into words to describe the humanities, as it makes sense in my head, but it is very hard for me to put into words. The humanities provide the same strong feelings as each other to the people who experience them, evoking strong emotions in ways that other fields cannot do. I found that the humanities are best described by During’s quote, “a loosely linked conglomeration of practices, interests, comportments, personae, moods, purposes, and values, and the various settings which these practices, interests, and so on inhabit.” The humanities are connected, though they are very different, through feeling. This idea is described in During’s final point, where he describes the humanities as sharing a particular set of ethos or beliefs. This ethos is the feeling that comes with being creative in the way that the humanities allow, which is unable to be described to anyone who has not participated in them.
